Our First Bookclub Meeting

And now we have decide the nastiest of decisions… When we shall have our first meeting to discuss John Caputo’s On Religon (this link will take you to our page on the book which includes a link to the book, some reviews, and a preview of the text)?

And there is another decision to make as well.  We’d like to do a lot of this via video chat – this way we can really talk to and see one another.  And we’ll investigate our options there, and may ask some of you to come help us stress test various solutions so we can see what will meet our needs.  But some people are either unable or uninterested in preceding this way, and so we need to decide how to include them in on our conversation.  I think as long as we can figure out a way for people to see us talk and then have a chat option, it should be fine.  I’m open to all suggestions.

So, when shall we meet?  It needs to be after July 14th and I’d suggest we avoid both Wednesday nights and weekends.  We should aim for sometime between 7-11 EST in order to be as open as possible and still provide opportunity for people in various parts of the country to participate (I’d like to be more global about this, but one battle at a time!)  Aside from those criteria, I don’t have much in the way of opinion.  I’d like to do it before the 20th, however.. so that gives us about a number of options.

So if you’re interested, please indicate your availability in the comments and we’ll announce something as soon as we have enough data to reach a conclusion.

I’m in! I’ll order Caputo asap.

  2. Charlie says:

Yeah. I’d be interested in that. Been meaning to read that book anyway. I’m free Tues/Thurs eves after 5p MST.

  3. My best times are between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific, and then from 9 to 10 p.m. Pacific — on weekdays. I can do any weekday in the range you gave (July 14 to 20) — but the earlier we set the time the better, so that I can protect the time on my calendar.

  4. Tues/Thurs evening is sounding pretty good to me. But throughout the summer any evening after 5EST will work.

  5. Tuesday or Thursday works for me as well. After 6pm EST

i’ve gotta get the book ordered! local library doesn’t have it.

  6. Zeke says:

I’ve got it on my Kindle. Interested in the discussion.

  7. Drew says:

Tues. or Thurs. is cool by me. Hey the forum plugin is sweet Gideon! Did not know that existed.

  8. Charlie says:

Going to order the book now. Looking forward to it.

  9. Carolyn Frantz says:

I’m also good to go after 5 PM EST on any weekday after the 13th. The exception is July 17th, because I’ll be in Ohio for the weekend for, uh… *cough* denominational ordination stuff *cough*…

  10. Good to go! Got mine in the mail yesterday. Whenever is fine with me.

  11. mkettleson says:

Any resolution? Can we get something on our calendars?

  12. Gideon says:

I think we might give everyone a last chance tomorrow and then we’ll work out the best time for the most people. Hopefully Monday we can announce something.

  13. Jan Anderson says:

I’m pretty flexible until Fall Semester starts in late August. Still need to get the book.

I’m not a big fan of webcam use, so text chat is just fine with me.

  14. Josh says:

Thursdays would work best for me.

  15. Ellen says:

Wednesday or Thursday after 5:30 Central time would work well for me.

  16. I’ll see if I can join in. It is looking like Thursdays, but any day besides Monday is fine for me.

  17. Gideon says:

Okay, taking this all into consideration it seems the magic time is Thursday, July 16th at 8pm EST – or so says my little chart. The great news is that with what everyone said – this allows EVERYONE to participate!

So unless something else happens, everyone assume we’ll be meeting on the Video Chat page then. And yes, there is a ‘text chat only’ option!

  18. Collin says:

    I’m in!

  19. Drager says:

I am in on whatever works best. Look forward to it.
