Book Club Meeting, Redux

So last Thursday didn’t work out well for anyone, so let’s try again this week or next?  Same bat time, same bat channel…  This Thursday (17th) or next week (24th).  830 PM EST.
I may be a few minutes late, but does that work for everyone?

Blake Huggins Reviews ‘A People’s History of Christianity’

Blake Huggins has gotten a a head start in reading and thinking about our next Theology Book Club’s selection – Diana Butler Bass’s A People’s History of Christianity.  He won’t give away the ending, but it is worth a read whether you plan on reading the book or not (and you really should.)
I like it. [...]

Our Next Book Selection – Diana Butler Bass’ A People’s History of Christianity

In the same spirit as Howard Zinn’s groundbreaking work The People’s History of the United States, Diana Butler Bass reveals the under-reported movements, personalities, and spiritual practices that continue to inform and ignite contemporary Christian worship, activism, and social justice reforms in the name of Jesus. The book will offer up a much-needed “other side of the story” for progressive Christians, drawing from examples of alternative practices in every period of Christian history, including:

* Care for the environment and celebrating God in nature
* Defining compassion, hospitality, and social justice as the primary function of the church
* Pacifism as the dominant Christian response to war
* Highlighting the female attributes of God
* Celebrating human sexuality as a gift from God

Next Books Decided!

Alright, we have our next few books decided for us assuming everyone is alright with going with the most voted on items for our next few selections.
The results of our poll left Peter Rollins’ Orthodox Heretic as our late August selection – this is available in both book and ebook format (I’ll be reading it [...]

Poll: Our Next Book

We’ll be meeting again near the end of August (we’ll decide that next week) but for now we need to decide our next selection! So, we have a very big list of suggested books and instead of winnowing them down myself I thought it’d be better if we voted. But! When you [...]

Cancelling Tonight (8/6/09)

I’ve heard from enough people through other channels to safely cancel tonight.  Sorry for any inconvenience, but there would only be a few of us and I’m not up for it myself.
Of course, anyone who wants to use the video chat to talk or even talk about the book are welcome to do so.  Sorry [...]

Theology Book Club Meeting TONIGHT!

We’ve got our second Theology Book Club meeting tonight at 8pm EST in our Video Chat room!
Last time we developed a few best practices I thought I’d share:
1) We do have “text only” support, so if you want to come but don’t want to be on video/audio then you can do so using the text [...]

Next Theology Book Club Meeting

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get this up, I’m in the middle of a move and so my attention is a bit erratic!
Our first meeting went great, and we’re going to be staying with Caputo for our next session (so if you missed the first, you can still come talk Caputo with us!)
We [...]
